Even in bustling commercial centers, these quilt-wearers remain immersed in remembrance of the Lord** They are unaffected by their surroundings, reciting verses about the Holiness of Allah and internalizing its essence** Their sweet-tempered and humble nature intensifies their intoxication with divine love, and they share this ecstasy of love with others**

يَادِ کُرُوْ ڪَنِ کُوْدَرْيَا ڀَرِ بَازَرِ بِيْٽَا﮶
پَرَنِ سُوْرَ سُبْحَانَجِيْ پِيْرَ تَهِ پٖيْٽَا﮶
جٖيْلَاہَ مُهْ مِيْٽَا تٖيْلَاہَ نَشَا چَارِئَاءٌ نِيْھَجَا﮶

TRANSLITERATION
सिन्धी देवनागिरी

यादि गुरू कनि गोदड़िया। भरि बाज़रि बीठा।
पड़हनि सूर सुबहान जी। पीड़ तंहिं पीठा।
जेलाहं मुंहिं मीठा। तेलाहं नशा चाड़हिआऊं नींहं जा।

Parrhan soor'a subHaan'a jee, peerr'a tenhn peethha,

  • These quilt wearers remember the Lord even when they happen to be in commercial centres.They are not affected by environments. They recite the verse about Holiness of Allah and drink it deep in their heart. Since they are sweet-tempered (and humble), they get more intoxicated with love (at His mention), (or) they impart ecstasy of love to others.
    Note: Did the poet have in view any particular Quranic ‘Sura’ when he used the words ‘Sür Subhan’? I am inclined to doubt it. There are good many Quranic verses opening with or containing the word’ Subhan’, which means Holy. I reproduce below three of them (translated). The poet may not necessarily have meant any of them. He may have meant any other verse containing the word ‘Subhan’, Or he may have, more likely, used this word to denote the all-absorbing interest of the pious ascetics in the Holiness of Allah:
    You are all Holiness. Hence (kindly) save us from the tribulation (or severity) of Hell. (91, Al-Imran)
    (This verse contains a prayer for immunity from Hell.)
    He is Holy and far above the polytheistic views of these persons (i.e. pagans)
    (18, Yunus).
    (This verse reflects sublimity of Allah vis-a-vis all objects.)
    Holy is He who took his slave (i.e. the Prophet) at night from Masjid ul-Haram to the Masjid-ul-Aqsa. (1, Bani lsrail).
    (This verse refers to the ascension of the Prophet. The pious nomads may possibly be repeating it to express their anxious desire for a similar favour from Allah).
    TRADITION: Before going to sleep the Prophet used to reciteمسبحات i.e. the verse beginning with the wordsيسبح، سبح and سبحان.

    Beside the bazar, quilt- wearing ones stand remembering God,
    Repeating God's name, all attention to it they are,
    Charmed with humility they are lost in Lord's love,
    They charm others with their humility and ecstasy love,
    They charm others with their humility and ecstasy of love.


    الذين يلبسون لحافا باليا واقعون فى السوق يذكرون الهادي.
    هم يسبحون اﷲ عز وجل.
    هم يؤدون واجباتهم تماما ويشربون قدح الحب.
    أفواهم حلوة (هم خاضعون وخاشعون) ومستتغرقون فى عشق الإله.


    دھیان ہر نام سے لگاتے ہیں
    اعتبار خودی مٹاتے ہیں
    یہ خدا دوست اپنے ظاہر کو
    نورِ باطن سے جگمگاتے ہیں
    سعی۔ٔ پیہم کے بعد بیراگی
    ناتھ کو اپنے دل میں پاتے ہیں

    ہاتھ میں سبحہ دوش پر زنار
    یوں ہوئے جلوہ گر سر بازار
    ہائے وہ صورتیں خمار آگیں
    دیکھنے والے ہوگئے سرشار

    کھڑے ہیں وہ بازار میں، لب پر گُر کا نام،
    سورہ پڑھیں سبحان کی، اتاریں دل میں کلام،
    بول جوں شہد کا جام، مستی نے عشق کی مست کیا ہے۔
